Many kinds of cultural activities

The cultural center has exhibition halls for the permanent exhibition of the historical church items of the monastery as well as for the temporary exhibitions. The monastery library has specialized in Orthodox culture and theology and serves in addition to the brotherhood, scholars and students also the visitors of the monastery.

Valamo monastery has traditionall been activie in different kinds of cultural activities. The old monastery on Lake Ladoga, where the brotherhood came from, was known also as a peasant monastery, but the workshops of the brotherhood were also known for icon painting, photography and book binding. Manuscripts were copied in the cells. Valamo monastery started as a publishing house of printed books already in 1870's.

The cultural activities in the new location of the monastery in Heinävesi started to expand after the completion and inauguration of the new Cultural center building. The festive opening seminar, called togather by archbishop Paul, was arranged on 21-23 September 1984.

At the premises of the Cultural center, also the library and archive of the monastery started their operations. The picture and the word met under one roof.

The conference rooms of the Cultural center bring together both Orthodox and other organizations that arrange their events in the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery.

The cultural activities of Valamo monastery helped the Orthodox church of Finland to open itself towards the society at large, and the monastery was called a "window to Orthodoxy".

In 2006, the Cultural center was expanded with exhibition halls for the historical church items as well as for temporary exhibitions.
