Walks

Several marked walking routes can be found in the monastery’s surrounding area. The most popular circular walk takes you to the pilgrim’s wooden cross which is located by Lake Juojärvi. The length of the walk is around 4 km (2.5 miles) and it will lead you over the hilltops and down along the lakeside.

More challenging walk will take you from the monastery’s cemetery to the enchanting area of the Prayer‘s Woods. The path will take you to the hermit’s cabin complete with prayer books and icons. This walk is around 3 km (1.5 miles) long.

The longest walk (18 km/11 miles) takes you from the New Valamo Monastery to the Lintula Convent. This ‘Pilgrim’s Route’ goes through a varied landscape, thus proper walking footwear is highly recommended.

Canal tours

In the summertime, idyllic canal tours on the scenic waterways of Heinävesi between the New Valamo Monastery and the Lintula Convent are arranged on a daily basis. These include stops at the Treaty of Teusina border stone and the Lintula Holy Trinity Convent, the cruise is a wonderful opportunity to see the real Finnish lake district and learn about the region’s history. Other places to visit

Lintula Holy Trinity Convent is located around 14 km (8.5 miles) from the Valamo Monastery. There is a cafeteria and gift shop in Lintula, and tours are arranged for groups.
