Winter Church

Winter Church - Church of Saints Sergei and Herman

Northern Russian Orthodox monasteries traditionally have a separate winter church. The winter church of the Valaam Monastery is connected to the main church. The church is dedicated to the memory of the monastery's patron saints, Sergei and Herman of Valaam, and its temple feast, or praasnieka, is celebrated annually on the eleventh of September.

The iconostasis of the church, built in the spirit of the 16th and 17th centuries, contains both old and newer icons. The youngest of them are the work of students of the Russian icon painter Archimandrite Zinon. The intercessory prayer group fresco above the iconostasis was painted in collaboration between Archimandrite Zinon and Archimandrite Arsen.
