Course description
Note! The course is full, registrations are being accepted for reserve places.
The course is intended for students who have mastered the basics of icon painting and are able to work independently. Painting an icon is a silent prayer, but in practice, implementing silence during the courses can often be challenging. Silence is an essential part of the icon painting process, because only with it can we create space for dialogue between the painter and the subject. During the retreat, the classroom is quieted so that everyone works with their icon in silence, with the teacher guiding each student as needed and sometimes also all together. Conversation between students is completely abandoned in the classroom. Everyone can choose for themselves whether they want to cultivate silence outside of class. Those who want to continue the peace of the class during meals can enjoy their meals in silence in the Trapesan Emperor's Cabinet. The monastery's services and the course's own, short Jesus Prayer services deepen the retreat experience and help transform the external silence into an internal one. The course depicts the archangel Raphael, who appears in the Old Testament book of Tobit. His name means "God has healed" and Raphael is revered in the Eastern Church specifically as a healer. According to tradition, Raphael was the angel who stirred up the water at the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, "and whoever first stepped into the stirring water was made well of whatever disease he had." ( John 5:2–4) You will receive the icon base and the prepared model at the beginning of the course. You can also purchase other tools and materials needed for the course from the institute. The course begins on March 4th, the previous night's accommodation is included in the course price, and any meals on March 3rd will be paid for at Trapesa at normal prices. Please note that people under 35 years of age receive a 40 percent discount on the price of icon painting courses. The teacher is icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala.
This course uses the Epass mobile application as a payment method.
