Valamo Library

The Valamo Monastery Library, continuing the work of the Valamo Monastery Library of Laatokka, is a special library that serves the monastery's brotherhood, college, staff, as well as monastery guests, researchers, students, and other information seekers.

The library holds the largest collection of Russian Orthodox literature in Western Europe, comprising approximately 20,000 volumes: books, periodicals, and manuscripts. The oldest works date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The Valamo collection of Laatokka and other old Russian and Church Slavonic literature are located in a closed storage vault.

The library's new collection comprises over 30,000 volumes. The collection grows through acquisitions, exchanges, and donations. The focus is on literature concerning Orthodoxy and monastic tradition. Growing areas in theological literature include icon literature and hagiography. The new collection also contains a wealth of non-fiction and fiction, especially that which relates to Orthodox culture and values.

Located in the Valamo Cultural Center in Heinävesi, the Valamo Monastery Library is, alongside the Orthodox Church Museum RIISA, the most important memory organization of the Orthodox Church of Finland.

Using the Library

The library's old collection, the so-called Valamo collection of Laatokka, is located in a closed vault. Works are provided to researchers for reading room use during the library's official hours. Separate instructions are followed for handling works and other documents. Staff will guide you in retrieving them.

Works from the new collection are lent for 28 days, and to researchers by agreement. Loans can be renewed three times if there are no active reservations. Periodicals, reference works, manuals, and materials classified as rare works are not available for home loan.

The library facilities have several reading spots. Customers have access to a copier, printing and scanning facilities, and an Internet connection.

The cataloged collection can be browsed in the online library without logging in. By logging into your account with your Valamo library card customer ID and a four-digit PIN, you can also renew loans, create a virtual favorite bookshelf, edit contact information, and reserve and rate materials in the online library. The advanced search menu allows you to limit and expand your search in many ways. Through it, you can also track the arrival of new books in our collection.

Interlibrary loan services follow the guidelines agreed upon by interlibrary loan libraries and the regulations of the lending library. Interlibrary loan is subject to a fee. If you wish to borrow a work from our collection via interlibrary loan, please contact your nearest library.

Factors influencing acceptance:

  • Suitability of the material for the Valamo Monastery Library's collection profile

  • Condition of the material

  • Library's available resources

The library accepts donations of well-preserved publications that are missing from the collection or complement it as needed.

Intent to donate should be discussed with the librarian in advance.

Volunteer at the Library

Are you interested in volunteering, an internship, or civil service at Valamo Library? Every year, several library professionals, interns, and specialists in specific areas of our collections participate in volunteer work. Familiarity with Axiell Aurora, cataloging skills, an understanding of the Orthodox faith, and diverse language skills are beneficial in this inspiring work. We particularly value knowledge of less common languages such as Greek, Russian, and Church Slavonic. Feel free to contact us!
