Saint John of Valamo

Saint Johannes of Valamolainen (1873-1958)

Saint Johannes of Valamolainen was a beloved confessor and a gracious elder. He was born on February 26, 1873 in Tver, Russia, and was ordained as a monk in the monasteries of Valamo on Lake Ladoga, Petsamo and Heinävesi. He was a theologian with a gentle and humble heart, who shared the bright wisdom of the spirit in his letters to the sorrowful people of the world. He was a direct companion, whose profound words comforted and encouraged others to persevere even in difficult trials. Father Johannes' collections of letters, printed as books, have been translated into many different languages. The deified ascetic lived out the truth of Christ's unity, peace and harmony in all creation. He died on June 5, 1958 in Valamo, Heinävesi. The memory of the holy elder is cherished with great warmth and devotion.
