Course description

The course introduces the rich tradition of Orthodox church music under the leadership of Archdeacon Jaakob, the director of the monastery's festive choir. The goal is to learn how a choir develops from a singing group. The course includes intensive exercises and the opportunity to sing at the Valamo Monastery's vigil and liturgy. The program may also include a concert. The male choir school is intended for men aged 18–55 who are skilled in singing and have a keen ear. (Those aged 16–18 can participate if an adult is with them in Valamo). Previous experience in Orthodox church music is beneficial, but not necessary. The choir school consists of several courses, which will be held three or four times a year on weekends in the future. In 2026, the courses will be held from 6–8 March, 5–7 June and 6–8 November. You can participate in one weekend or deepen your learning in several courses.
