Course description

The course is suitable for people who have attended the Valamo Institute's beginners' course, or for those with similar knowledge and skills. The icon depicts the Archangel Gabriel with big eyes and a delicate face. The original icon dates back to the second half of the 12th century and represents a typical face-lighting method for icons of the time, which utilizes the white surface of the board's primer as a light source. The original image is kept in St. Petersburg, at the Museum of Russian Art. The icon is painted on a primed icon board using the traditional egg tempera technique. You will receive the primer and model at the beginning of the course. You can also purchase other tools and materials needed for the course from the institute. Please note that people under 35 years of age receive a 40 percent discount on the price of icon painting courses. The teacher is visual arts teacher and icon painter Elina Oravala.
