Course description

THE COURSE IS FULL, WE ARE ACCEPTING REGISTRATION FOR SUBSTITUTE PLACES

The course is suitable for those who have mastered the basic skills of icon painting and have already painted a few icons. The course will paint an analytical version of the spiritual treasure of our church, the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God of Konevitsa.   Analytical version means an approach in which we work with historical pigments, the same ones that the original image was painted with. We strive to reconstruct the original image as it was when it was new. We try to see through the overpaintings and damage and reach the intention of the artist who painted the original image. During the course, we will participate in the procession of the Mother of God of Konevitsa (by boat or on foot, depending on the participant's desire) and the course will end on the icon's feast day. We will use the institute's pigments during the course, from which we will prepare the colors together. The pigment fee is 10 €. We focus especially on the correct layering of tempera and the construction of color areas, color harmony and the relationship between gold and color. An icon base the size of the original image, commissioned for the course, is purchased from the institute; the price will be announced later. You can also purchase other tools and materials needed for the course from the institute. Please note that those under 35 years of age receive a 40 percent discount on the price of icon painting courses. The teacher is icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala.
