Course description

The courses under the heading Icon Painter's Gym train different areas of icon painting. Similar to strength training, these courses train one muscle group at a time. The first course focuses on the costumes of saints. The course is suitable for anyone interested in icon painting. How did the holy empress Helena or the great martyr Catherine dress? What kind of clothes are painted for a nun or monk? For a priest or an Aleut boy? Learn to create the costumes of the characters in an icon based on Byzantine models. You will become familiar with tunics, military uniforms, himations, mafors and headdresses. We practice by drawing and painting on practice bases with tempera paints. The exercises also develop an eye for color and knowledge of pigments. Students also compile their own electronic learning material together. There is an independent continuation part to the course, which focuses on buildings, objects, furniture and attributes of saints. Please note that people under 35 years of age receive a 40 percent discount on the icon painting course fee. The teacher is icon painter Katariina Koskivaara-Ilmonen.

This course accepts the Epass mobile application as a payment method.

Koskivaara-Ilmonen Katarina

I am Katarina Koskivaara-Ilmonen, an icon painter, visual artist and art pedagogue. I have graduated with a Master of Arts from the University of Applied Arts and have taught art throughout my career in several institutions, from community colleges to universities. I have taught icon painting to young people and adults since 2016 at the Helsinki Orthodox Parish, and since 2022 also at the Kalliola College. My passion in icon painting is drawing, I could do it every day and not get tired of it! The best thing about teaching is when a student realizes something and is then able to apply it to their work. You can see the icons I paint and other art on Instagram, the account name is icon painter.
