Course description

The iconography of the subject to be painted is based on the prophecy of Saint Simeon (Luke 2:34–35)

“Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, the child’s mother: “This child is destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel. He is destined for a sign that will not be recognized, and a sword will pierce through your own soul also. So the thoughts of many will be revealed.” The icon depicts either one or seven swords aimed at Mary's heart. This is one of the few Orthodox icons of the Mother of God that does not depict her with the baby Jesus. The icon is also known as the Mother of God, the Softener of Hard Hearts. We will go through the content and theology of the icon theme together during the course, and the materials can be purchased from the school. The course is best suited for those who have mastered the basics of icon painting and tempera technique and have already painted a few icons. Please also note that those under 35 years of age receive a 40 percent discount on the price of the icon painting courses. The course begins on August 28th, the previous night's accommodation is included in the course price, and any meals on August 27th will be paid at Trapesa's normal prices.
