Course description

During the weekend, you will learn about the Japanese art of flower arrangement, ikebana. The course starts from the basics. We will learn about the role of ikebana in both the history and present of Japan. We will also learn about the attitude of lifelong learning in Japanese culture and the appreciation of art and aesthetics in everyday life, following the seasons. We will follow the modern Sogetsu school curriculum in our teaching and learn basic techniques using different plant materials. In addition to basic arrangements, we will also practice creative work on free arrangements. The course's teaching methods include, in addition to the teacher's ikebana demonstrations, guidance in making arrangements and finally examining the finished arrangements together, where you will learn and get inspiration from the work of other ikebanists. Despite working together, everyone works from their own starting points, following their own path as an artist. The goal is that you will be inspired to boldly express your creativity with plants and learn the basic techniques that will help you continue practicing ikebana at home. Through the exercises, you will learn in practice the essence and tension of the three basic elements of ikebana – line, color and mass – in arrangements and begin to look at the surrounding nature and arrangements in a new way. In order for the course to inspire you to boldly create arrangements at home, you can also practice making arrangements in vases found in your own home for the special occasions of your life. For the course, you will need pruning shears, vases, branch material and cut flowers, as well as note-taking tools. The teacher will send more detailed information about the necessary materials to the students by email about a week before the start of the course. Tools can also be borrowed from the teacher. The course teacher is ikebana teacher Ruut Mononen.

Teacher

Mononen Ruut

Ruut Mirjam Mononen became interested in ikebana in 2021 and after moving to Japan the following year, she was able to attend weekly classes with Japanese master teachers. In 'The Road of Flowers', she is particularly inspired by finding her own voice and the simultaneous limitation and infinity of forms of expression using the plant materials available at any given time.
