Course description

Do you dream of writing your own book? Whether it's a non-fiction book, a family history or a fictional work, you have to get started. The course focuses specifically on how to get started writing, how many ways your story could begin and what ways to keep your writing alive and supported.

The course begins on Friday morning, October 9, 2026, the previous night's accommodation is included in the course price. Any meals on October 8 will be paid for at the café-restaurant Trapesa at normal prices.

Course program

Thursday 8.10.

Arrival and accommodation. Any meals 8.10. will be paid for at Trapesa at normal prices.

Friday 9.10.

06.00 Midnight and morning service. I moment.

07.30–09.00 Breakfast

09.00 Well planned is half done. Or is it? Writing starts in many different ways and do you even need to know what you want to write about? Playing with words takes you down new paths and you may find unexpected themes, ways and wishes for your own writing.

12.00 Lunch

Do I shape the frame or do I live in the moment and write according to my mood? Does the frame limit me and do I only get inspired by inspiration? Why do I write or can I not write?

18.00- IX moment. Vespers. Small post-vespers service and three canons.

19.30 Dinner

Saturday 10.10.

06.00 Midnight and morning service. Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

07.30–09.00 Breakfast

09.00 Good starts. What makes you continue reading the text? What keeps you hooked? The first task of a writer is to read. Different texts flex my linguistic thinking and shape my writing possibilities.

Lunch/Moleben or prayer service at 12:00

13:00 Now I'm starting but I don't know where I'm going and when I'll finish. Keep writing alive with routines. The writer-self needs to be nourished and sometimes it even needs artificial respiration. No one knows if anything will come of this in the end, but still, you just have to write. If you feel like it, then so be it. Otherwise, you won't be finished. But don't think about being finished. This moment and this piece are enough for this trouble.

18.00- Vigil

19.30 Evening meal

Sunday 11.10.

07.30–10.00 Breakfast

09.00- III moment. Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Panagia.

12.00- Room handover no later than 12.00.

On Sunday, the fruits of writing will be collected in a common basket.

Teacher

Stolbow Marianna

I am a writer of fact and fiction, a literature therapy instructor, a neuropsychiatric coach, author and trainer, and a trainer of social services professionals. As far as I know my mother and father's family, they have all been Orthodox. That's why my path to Valamo was quite natural. At the moment, I only teach literature therapy and creative writing courses here. Through literature therapy, we dive into our own minds with the help of texts. We write, read, and reflect on what the text says about us. Where it hits and what it speaks to us. Creative writing, on the other hand, always involves play. Only by stepping beyond the boundaries of play do we transcend our accustomed selves and create something new. My task is to transport the writer to his or her sources. Each of us carries a novel's worth of stories inside. My task is simply to open the cork and help the writer blow out what is already knocking and reaching out to us. I have a Master of Arts degree, and have studied general history, gender studies, and Italian and Russian literature. I have studied writing at the School of Critical Studies. www.mariannastolbow.fi
