Concert: Suõmmkar

Welcome to the Suõmmkar band's concert at the Valamo Cultural Center on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 4:30 PM!

Suõmmkar is a band that combines old, Skolt Sámi traditional music (leuʹdd, quadrilles, play songs and lullabies) with modern world music. The band's vocalists are Anna Lumikivi (leuʹdd, vocals), Hanna-Maaria Kiprianoff (leuʹdd, vocals). The players are Marko Jouste (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Pessi Jouste (violin), Uula Jouste (bass) and Elias Nieminen (drums and percussion).

Suõmmkar released their debut album "Suõmmkar" in 2018. The album's moods vary from brisk quadrille revelry to poetic, melancholic ballads and melodic true stories, leuʹds, that describe life in a straightforward manner. Suõmmkar's music reflects both the Skolt Sámi past and present, as well as how well the Skolt Sámi culture and language have remained strong throughout the centuries despite difficulties.

Suõmmkar will release his second album "Peäccam da Paččjokk" in late 2025. The theme of the album is to highlight Skolt Sámi music that is related to the old traditions of the Petsamo and Pasjoki siida. The restriction is also related to the family backgrounds of the Suõmmkar band's soloists Anna Lumikivi and Hanna-Maaria Kiprianoff.
