Musical monologue: Old Valamo Juuli - on the sisters' journey

"Juuli Ortju was only 14 years old when she climbed into a sleigh with the schema monk Jefrem in the freezing winter. Cannons thundered on the shores of Lake Ladoga. The journey towards Finland began and brought the duo to Heinävesi and finally to the new Valamo.

The exhausting journey, the shared moments of the Valamo sisters, homesickness and the miracle of Orthodoxy accompanied the women's journey until the last flicker of the lamp flame"

Aunt Juuli's life path has fascinated Jonna since she was a little girl.

For a couple of years now, she has had a great dream in her heart to create a musical monologue about the journey and life of the Old Valamo sisters. Transfers emotions and moods to the present day through the story.

Jonna bravely took on the challenge, because dreams are made to come true and what's even better, to experience the premiere of this performance in Valamo!

The story is based on the women's own stories as well as book, article and interview materials that Jonna Ortju has found in the library, the internet, relatives and the Valamo bookstore.

The music of the performance is old traditional and partly Karelian folk music.
