Estonia, Finland and Orthodoxy – common history and future at the Valamo course in March

The course examines the common roots, cultural commonalities, and future prospects of Estonian and Finnish Orthodoxy in the peaceful environment of Valamo.

Valamo College will organize a course on March 13–15, 2026, which examines the common roots, developments, and future prospects of Orthodoxy in Estonia and Finland. “Estonia, Finland, and Orthodoxy – Common History and Future” brings together those interested in the topic to reflect on the ecclesiastical and cultural interaction between the two countries in the peaceful environment of Valamo.

Lectures and discussions will open up perspectives on both the past and the future: how Orthodox life has been lived in the history of the two countries, and what new paths it can open in the future. The course is suitable for anyone interested in church history, intercultural interaction or the deeper meanings of the Orthodox tradition.

The course will feature, among others, Bishop Damaskinos of Haapsalu, Sister Porfyria from Reomäki Monastery, Risto Nordell, the Estonian Orthodox Church Friendship Society VYS ry, the Tuglas Society and the Johannes Theologian Singers.

In addition to teaching, the course package includes accommodation and meals. Accommodation options are available in hotels, college hotels and guesthouses. Registration ends on February 28, 2026.

Valamo College welcomes all those interested in the topic to a weekend where the common Orthodox heritage of Estonia and Finland will be revealed in a new light.
