Course description

The aim of the course is to provide the skills to temporarily act as an Orthodox cantor in various services such as burials, baptisms, marriages and the blessing of water. The study material is the service books used in the services (including the Eulogy and the funeral service). The course introduces the formulas of the services, the texts to be sung and read, the use of the voice and the voicing, and the basics of liturgical choir management. The reader's parts are also studied. The course participants form a choir and during the course participate in the monastery's services in a separately agreed manner. The course is suitable for those who sing in an Orthodox choir and those who have mastered the basics of church singing, music theory and musical performance. The course does not provide formal qualifications for an Orthodox cantor. The teacher is TM, musician (YAMK), music pedagogue (AMK) dir.cant. Varvara Merras-Häyrynen. The course is supported by the Finnish Orthodox Church.
