Fairytale Illustrator

Rudolf Koivu – A Fairytale Illustrator

A comprehensive exhibition showcasing the illustration art of Rudolf Koivu (1890–1946) will open at the Valamo Monastery Cultural Centre in March 2026.

The magnificent illustrations are presented in many forms: original works as well as striking reproductions in various publication formats. This family-friendly exhibition highlights not only the visual richness of Koivu’s art but also the ways in which the illustrations are displayed and narrated. Visitors can explore excerpts from the fairy tales Koivu illustrated and gain deeper insight into the artist himself. Personal photographs offer a glimpse behind the public persona.

Despite a difficult childhood, Rudolf Koivu became one of Finland’s most beloved illustrators, whose work continues to enchant viewers today. His illustrations combine beauty and mystery with bold exaggeration. By placing contrasts—such as beauty and ugliness, fear and courage—side by side, he leads the viewer into an enchanted world where anything is possible. This perspective mirrors that of a child: curious, wondering, and easily inspired. Koivu had the rare ability to see the world through a child’s eyes, while adults may also discover deeper layers of meaning in his imagery.

The exhibition is complemented by a special display in the Valamo Monastery Library, featuring Koivu’s graphic work as seen in calendar illustrations and book cover art. A small publication presenting Koivu’s life and artistic career will be released in connection with the exhibition.

The exhibition is open until the end of 2026 and is produced in collaboration with the Amer Cultural Foundation and the Tuusula Art Museum.

Open 29 March – 31 December 2026. Admission: €12 / adult. Free entry for visitors under 18. The same ticket also grants access to the Monastery Museum.
