Course description

Great works of church music are played throughout the Christian world during Lent.   The course will introduce the words and melody of Johann Sebastian Bach's Matthew and John Passions, as well as other works that tell the story of Christ's suffering to the joy and glory of Easter. The course will introduce you to music related to the time created in the Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox churches. The teacher is the well-known and beloved music journalist MuM Risto Nordell.

Nordell Risto

Risto Nordell (born 1959) is a music and culture journalist for Yleisradio, who has received several awards for his programs, including the Church Culture Award in 2015, the KOURA Award from the Yleisradio Education Foundation, and the Christian Media Act of the Year award in 2015. His life's purpose is music and the quality of life is enhanced by fishing, sailing, sourdough baking, and the sleety Archipelago Sea in November. Nordell graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 1989 with a Master of Music degree. His major was singing, but to the delight of the audience, he stopped singing 35 years ago. Risto Nordell is a sought-after lecturer and concert host. He has contributed to many magazines and currently writes about classical music and opera for Suomen Kuvalehti. Nordell's best-known radio program is Riston Valinta, which he has hosted on Yle Radio 1 since 2007.
