The exhibition presents works created during the silk and gold embroidery courses at Valamo College.

Works made during silk and gold embroidery courses on display at Valamo College

A new exhibition at Valamo College opens windows into the subtle world of traditional silk and gold embroidery. The exhibits showcase craftsmanship made by course participants, reflecting both centuries-old techniques and the dedicated training of their creators.

Silk and gold embroidery is one of the most respected craft traditions in Orthodox culture. It is used, among other things, in textile icons, the decoration of church textiles, and liturgical ceremonial vestments. Even small stitches require patience, precision and quiet concentration – precisely what makes the technique unique and timeless.

The course is taught by craftswoman Leena Kuivalainen, who has studied silk and gold embroidery under the guidance of master teachers Nina and Nadeshda Osipova. Under her guidance, the participants have been able to get acquainted with traditional working methods, materials and the symbolism of gold embroidery.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to see up close how tradition lives on, is passed on and takes shape in the hands of new artists. Each work tells in its own way about the joy of discovery, the skill of the course participants and their respect for the ancient craft tradition.

Welcome to visit the exhibition at Valamo College!

The exhibition is open Mon-Fri 9-15 in the lobby of Valamo College. Free admission.
