Course description

This course is intended for individuals who have completed Valamo Folk High School's beginner's course, or who have equivalent knowledge and skills. Every human being is created in the image of God, and we reflect, like a mirror, the Holiness of our Creator. Others, despite also having been weak and sinful, reflect His Holiness more than others and can therefore serve as examples of sanctification for us who are still on the journey to perfection. Through their witness of faith leading to death, their ascetic struggle, or by selflessly serving their neighbor, the saints have glorified the image of God within themselves so that holiness has radiated from them with particular power. The saints dedicated their lives to serving others and to prayer for the whole world. Therefore, we continue to ask them to pray for us, knowing that the bond of love uniting the members of the Church does not break with the death of the body. In this course, icons of holy people will be painted. The person to be painted can be your or your loved one's patron saint, or a saint who has become otherwise important to you. If you don't find a suitable subject before the course begins, don't worry, time has been reserved at the beginning of the course for choosing a suitable saint that speaks to you and for finding a good model with the help of the instructor. Western saints should be from the time of the undivided Church, i.e., before the year 1054. The instruction includes the stages of icon painting from researching the subject to preparing the drawing and oiling (varnishing) the finished icon. You can purchase the icon base and other tools and materials needed for the course from the folk high school. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on the price of icon painting courses. Instructor: icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala.
