The great feasts of the church year bring a large number of pilgrims and guests drawn to the atmosphere of Valamo to Valamo each year. A peaceful atmosphere and atmospheric festive services create the best possible setting for celebrating the holidays. The Monastery can also be visited for a day during the celebration.

The Feast of the Baptism of Christ, or Theophany, celebrated on the sixth day of January, is the oldest Christian feast after Easter. In Valamo, on Theophany Day, 6.1., immediately after the liturgy, a cross procession is made from the main church to the Monastery's shore onto the lake ice, where a great blessing of water is performed in memory of Christ's baptism in the Jordan River. A beautiful, cross-shaped ice hole has been made on the ice.

During the blessing of water, prayers are read and sung, and the Gospel is read. The officiating priest, often the head of the Monastery or a visiting bishop, immerses the hand cross into the water three times. After this, all participants in the service are sprinkled with the consecrated water. The consecrated water can be consumed in the church and taken home as souvenirs in small bottles, which are sold in the church.
