Venerable John of Valamo

Venerable John of Valamo (1873-1958)

Venerable John of Valamo was a beloved confessor and a graced spiritual elder. He was born on February 26, 1873, in Tver, Russia, and struggled as a monk in Valamo Monastery on Lake Laatokka, as well as in Petsamo and Heinävesi Valamo monasteries. He was a hesychast and a theologian of a humble heart, who shared bright spiritual wisdom in his letters with people burdened by the world. He was an immediate companion, whose profound words comforted and encouraged others to persevere even in difficult trials. Father John's collections of letters, published as books, have been translated into many different languages. The deified ascetic lived out the unity, peace, and harmony of Christ in all creation. He died on June 5, 1958, in Heinävesi Valamo. The memory of the holy elder is cherished with great warmth and devotion.
