Souvenir Shop Tuohus

You can also stop for shopping in Valamo. This is not a modern invention either, as pilgrims and other travelers have always wanted to bring home some souvenirs from their monastery trip – even stones from the monastery grounds, if they lacked money. In Valamo on Lake Ladoga, a relatively large souvenir shop was already operating early on, selling, for example, handicrafts and icons made by the brotherhood.

Valamo's shop is known as Tuohus and serves visitors daily from morning to evening. On the shelves of the small shop, you'll find a comprehensive selection of products related to the Orthodox way of life: hand-painted icons, printed icons, oil lamps, prayer ropes, postcards, neck crosses and icons, Valamo-made beeswax tapers, monastery tea, and much more. The selection also includes many different gift and decorative items, sweets, and presents – regardless of denomination.

The beard oils, clothing waxes, candles, and curly birch boxes made at the monastery have been granted the Key Flag symbol.

Tuohus is also one of the best-stocked Orthodox bookstores in the country. In addition to Valamo Monastery's own publications, a wide range of literature on Orthodox faith and its various aspects is available. Those interested in Orthodox church music will also be pleased with Tuohus's wide selection.
