Souvenir Shop Tuohus

In Valamo, you can also stop for shopping. This is not a modern invention either, as pilgrims and other travelers have always wanted to bring home some souvenirs from their monastery trip – for lack of money, even stones from the monastery grounds. In Old Valamo on Lake Ladoga, a relatively extensive souvenir shop operated early on, selling, for example, handicrafts and icons made by the brotherhood.

Valamo's shop is known as Tuohus and it serves guests daily from morning to evening. The shelves of the small shop offer a comprehensive selection of products related to the Orthodox way of life: hand-painted icons, printed icons, lampadas, prayer ropes, postcards, neck crosses and icons, beeswax candles made in Valamo, monastery tea and much more. The selection also includes many different gifts and decorative items, sweets and treats – regardless of denomination.

Tuohus is also one of the best-equipped Orthodox bookstores in the country. In addition to Valamo Monastery's own publications, a wide range of literature on the Orthodox faith and its various aspects is available. Those interested in Orthodox church music will also be pleased with Tuohus's extensive selection.
