Course description

The course is intended for individuals who want to learn to paint an Orthodox icon using traditional techniques. Students will paint the Nevalainen version of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” icon on the course. The instruction covers the stages of icon painting from studying the subject to preparing the drawing and oiling (varnishing) the finished icon. Lectures will cover the icon from an art historical and theological perspective. In addition, there will be an in-depth look at the materials and techniques used in icon painting, which date back to Pharaonic Egypt. You will receive the icon base and model at the beginning of the course. Other tools and materials needed for the course can be purchased from the institute. Instruction for the course begins on 9.10., accommodation for the previous night is included in the course price, any meals on 8.10. are paid at Trapesaan at normal prices. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting courses. The instructor is icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala.
