Course description

Do you dream of writing your own book? Whether it's a non-fiction book, a family story, or a fictional work, you have to start. The course focuses specifically on how to kickstart writing, in how many ways your story could begin, and what means exist to keep the writer-self alive and support it.

The course instruction begins on Friday morning 9.10.2026, with accommodation for the previous night included in the course price. Any meals on 8.10. are paid for at cafe-restaurant Trapesa at normal prices.

Course program

Thursday 8.10.

Arrival and accommodation. Any meals on 8.10. are paid for at Trapesa at normal prices.

Friday 9.10.

06.00 Midnight Service and Matins. First Hour.

07.30–09.00 Breakfast

09.00 Well planned is half done. Or is it? Writing starts in many different ways, and do you even need to know what you want to write about? Playing with words leads to new paths, and from there you might find unexpected themes, methods, and wishes for your own writing.

12.00 Lunch

Do I shape the structure or do I live in the moment and write according to my feeling? Does structure restrict me, and do I only get inspired by inspiration? Why do I write, or can I choose not to write?

18.00- Ninth Hour. Vespers. Small Compline and tri-canon.

19.30 Evening meal

Saturday 10.10.

06.00 Midnight Service and Matins. Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom.

07.30–09.00 Breakfast

09.00 Good beginnings. What makes you keep reading a text? What holds you in its grip? A writer's first task is to read. Different texts limber up my linguistic thinking and shape my writing possibilities.

Lunch / Moleben, or prayer service, at 12.00

13.00 Now I'm starting, but I don't know where I'm going or when I'll stop. Keep writing alive with routines. The writer-self needs to be nourished, and sometimes it even needs artificial respiration. No one knows if anything will come of this in the end, but you just have to write. If it feels right, that is. Otherwise, it won't be finished. But don't think about finished. This moment and this section are enough for now.

18.00- Vigil

19.30 Evening meal

Sunday 11.10.

07.30–10.00 Breakfast

09.00- Third Hour. Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. Panagia.

Check-out by 12.00.

On Sunday, the fruits of writing will be gathered into a common basket.

Teacher

Stolbow Marianna

I am a writer of fact and fiction, a literature therapy instructor, a neuropsychiatric coach, writer, and trainer, as well as a trainer for social and health care professionals. As far as I know my mother's and father's families, all have been Orthodox. That is why my path to Valamo was quite natural. I currently only teach literature therapy and creative writing courses here. Through literature therapy, we delve into our own minds with the help of texts. We write, read, and reflect on what the text tells us. Where it hits and what it addresses in us. In creative writing, however, there is always play involved. Only by stepping over the boundary of play do we transcend our usual selves and create something new. My task is to guide the writer to their sources. Each of us carries a novel's worth of stories within us. My task is simply to uncork and help the writer breathe out what is already knocking and reaching out to us. By education, I am an MA, I have studied general history, gender studies, and Italian and Russian literature. I have studied writing at the Critical Academy. www.mariannastolbow.fi
