Silk and Gold Embroidery Exhibition at Valamo Folk High School

The exhibition presents works created in Valamo Folk High School's silk and gold embroidery courses.

Works created in silk and gold embroidery courses on display at Valamo Folk High School

Valamo Folk High School's new exhibition opens windows into the delicate world of traditional silk and gold embroidery. On display are examples of craftsmanship made by course participants, reflecting both centuries-old techniques and the dedicated practice of their creators.

Silk and gold embroidery is one of the most esteemed craft traditions in Orthodox culture. It is used, among other things, in textile icons, the decoration of church textiles, and liturgical vestments. Even small stitches require patience, precision, and quiet concentration – precisely what makes the technique distinctive and timeless.

The course instructor has been craft artist Leena Kuivalainen, who has specialized in silk and gold embroidery under the guidance of master teachers Nina and Nadeshda Osipova. Under her guidance, participants have been introduced to traditional working methods, materials, and the symbolism of gold embroidery.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to see up close how the tradition lives, is passed on, and takes shape in the hands of new creators. Each work tells in its own way of the joy of discovery by the course participants, their manual skill, and their respect for the ancient craft tradition.

Welcome to explore the exhibition!

The exhibition is open Mon-Fri from 9:00-15:00 in the Valamo Folk High School lobby until 27.9.2026. Free admission.
