Concert: Suõmmkar

Welcome to the Suõmmkar band's concert at Valamo Cultural Centre on Sat, 20.9.2025 at 4:30 PM!

Suõmmkar is a band that combines ancient Skolt Sámi traditional music (leuʹdd, quadrille, play and lullaby songs) with contemporary world music. The band's vocalists are Anna Lumikivi (leuʹdd, vocals), Hanna-Maaria Kiprianoff (leuʹdd, vocals). The instrumentalists are Marko Jouste (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Pessi Jouste (violin), Uula Jouste (bass), and Elias Nieminen (drums and percussion).

Suõmmkar released its debut album "Suõmmkar" in 2018. The album's moods range from lively quadrille merriment to poetic, melancholic ballads and melodic true stories, leuʹdds, that directly reflect living life. Suõmmkar's music vividly portrays both the past and present of Skolt Sámi culture, and at the same time, how well the Skolt Sámi culture and language have remained strong through centuries despite difficulties.

Suõmmkar will release its second album "Peäccam da Paččjokk" in late 2025. The album's theme is to showcase Skolt Sámi music related to the traditions of the old Petsamo and Paatsjoki siidas (villages). The scope also relates to the family backgrounds of Suõmmkar vocalists Anna Lumikivi and Hanna-Maaria Kiprianoff.
