Musical Monologue: Juuli of Old Valamo - on the sisters' journey

"Juuli Ortju was only 14 years old when she, on a winter's day, got into a sleigh with schema-monk Jefrem. Cannons roared on the shores of Lake Ladoga. The journey towards Finland began and brought the duo to Heinävesi and eventually to new Valamo.

The exhausting journey, the shared moments of Valamo's sisters, homesickness, and the miracle of Orthodoxy accompanied the women until the last flicker of the oil lamp”

Aunt Juuli's life path has fascinated Jonna since she was a little girl.

For a couple of years, she has had a great dream in her heart to create a musical monologue about the journey and life of the sisters of Old Valamo. To transfer emotions and atmospheres to the present day through the story.

Jonna bravely took on the challenge, because dreams are made to be fulfilled, and what could be more wonderful than to experience the premiere of this performance in Valamo!

The story is based on the women's own accounts, as well as book, article, and interview materials that Jonna Ortju has found in the library, online, from relatives, and from Valamo's bookstore.

The music for the performance is old traditional and partly Karelian folk music.
