Valamo's Well-being Path

The path combines contemplation and the health benefits of nature.

Valamo Monastery now features a well-being path, a clearly signposted and marked 1.6-kilometer path in the monastery's immediate surroundings for self-guided walking and contemplation. Along the path, there are six information signs providing details about the monastery's history, church teachings, and nature. The signs also offer self-guided well-being exercises.

The monastery's well-being path is modeled after the Metso well-being path concept, emphasizing the well-being effects of nature, developed in a collaborative project by Tapio Oy and the Finnish Forest Centre. In Valamo, the path was implemented as a project related to the studies of nature guide student Minna Koistinen.

Valamo's well-being path combines contemplation with the health and well-being benefits of nature. According to studies, spending 10 minutes in nature lowers blood pressure, 20 minutes in nature elevates mood, and 60 minutes in nature increases attentiveness.

A peaceful self-guided tour of the well-being path takes less than an hour, a guided tour slightly longer. Outdoor footwear and weather-appropriate gear are sufficient for the path.
