Malanja opera in Valamo on Thu 23 July at 4 PM and 6 PM

Malanja is the new opera for spring 2026, which brings the powerful spirit of Heikki Turunen's beloved novel Kuokka ja kannel to the stage.

This Finnish and Karelian language work takes you to the heart of life in a small border village, where ordinary daily life and the threat of Russia; love and death go hand in hand.

The opera is composed by Esko Alanen, the director is Sami Nousiainen, and the choreographer is Anastasia Kolomainen. The soloists consist of professional singers from all over Finland. The set design and costumes create a unique atmosphere that transports the audience to another world together with dancers and the Joensuu Luminanssi choir. The orchestra is conducted by Olli Mikkonen.

The performers are mainly music professionals from Joensuu; the group includes 8 soloists, a 15-member choir, a 4-member orchestra, and a dance group.

Cast: Roosa Tarvonen, Antti Pakkanen, Ella Kinnunen, Sanna Riissanen, Henri Jussila, Aamu Pulkkinenc, Heidi Lihavainen and Sakari Sillanpää.
