Karelian Christmas Heritage - Christmas Concert

Saturday 12.12 at 3 PM at Valamo Cultural Centre

soprano Sanna Matinniemi & pianist Jenna Ristilä

The Karelian Christmas Heritage Christmas Concert takes the listener to an old-time Karelian Christmas – to the sounds of music, memories, and Christmas traditions passed down from generation to generation.

The concert features music by Karelian-background composers and lyricists, beloved Christmas carols in Karelian, as well as the most significant and dearest Christmas carols from the childhoods of evacuee children, collected at the time, such as "Enkeli taivaan." The program also includes Jean Sibelius's esteemed Finlandia.

The concert transports the listener to a time when Christmas was built upon togetherness, singing, traditions, home preparations, and memories of loved ones. It is a warm journey into the Karelian Christmas landscape – to the Christmases of past generations, the childhood memories of evacuee children, and music that carried home and roots.

Award-winning opera singer, soprano Sanna Matinniemi has researched Karelian vocal music and, respecting her Karelian roots, created the concert series "My Most Beautiful Karelian Songs" and "Karelian Christmas Heritage." Pianist and doctoral researcher Jenna Ristilä also has Karelian roots.

The concert duration is approximately one hour.
