Pyhät Concert

Saturday 14.11 at 1 PM at Valamo Cultural Centre

Double bassist Essi Hirvonen

Essi Hirvonen  (b. 1993) is a double bassist, folk musician, and composer. Hirvonen's double bass music is a protest against today's fast-paced world, based on minimalist improvisation, minimalism, long lines, and the listening to and experiencing of the double bass's resonance.

Pyhät is a composition series created by Hirvonen, which deals with the interface between the visible and the invisible, spirituality, and contemplation.
The series' compositions are dedicated to holy people revered by the Orthodox Church, such as the holy martyr and confessor Johannes Sonkajanrantalainen.

Hirvonen's solo music is influenced by Karelian kantele playing tradition and rune-singing culture, and minimalist contemporary music. Hirvonen's debut album Pyhät was released in 2024.
