As humans, we are part of nature, we merge with creation. Connection to our inner self, to creation, and to the Creator creates a sense of meaning for our entire life. From seeing, cultivating, and recognizing beauty springs gratitude, and from gratitude, the desire to praise. Seeing holiness in everything creates reverence for all creation. At the same time, understanding and compassion for our life's journey, and for ourselves, arise. In this course, we use natural materials and colors, such as turmeric, berries, and other plants, from which colors are partially extracted on site. We paint with fingers, branches, and self-made brushes. For binding agents, we use, for example, soy milk. The painting locations are peaceful areas nestled in nature – including the lakeside, the pier, and the surroundings of chapels.

Literature and uplifting texts serve as inspiration for artistic work. Simple songs and humming are also included, strengthening the connection between body and mind. Prayer, singing, reading spiritual texts, and painting alternate, opening our senses to the omnipresent holiness. Participants also have the opportunity to use the lakeside sauna and take a refreshing dip in Lake Juojärvi, perhaps even with their own painting. While making art, we will gather herbal treatment ingredients from nature to gently pamper our bodies in the relaxing steam of the sauna. The course will primarily take place outdoors, weather permitting. In case of rain or cold weather, a classroom is available. The course requires no prior art experience – an open mind and a desire to participate are sufficient. It is suitable for everyone who longs for a connection to nature, spiritual deepening, and creative expression. The course instructors are artist, art educator, and spiritual growth coach Susanna Maria Kivistö and Valamo Monastery's Orthodox special library Librarian Virva Suvitie.

A material fee of 35 € is paid separately to the teacher either in cash or via MobilePay.

Accommodation for the night preceding the course is included in the course price; any meals on July 28 are paid for at Restaurant Trapesa at normal prices.

For this course, the Epassi mobile application can be used as a payment method.

Teacher

Kivistö Susanna Maria Kivistö

Susanna Maria Kivistö is an artist, art pedagogue, and spiritual growth instructor, for whom art is a way to explore humanity, nature, the existence of the entire universe, and different levels of consciousness.

She is inspired by the boundlessness and freedom of art, and the opportunity for inner transformation offered by the art process. “Art is a free space to play, to wonder with curiosity, as if seeing everything for the first time. By surrendering to the art process, we can discover new possibilities, transform stagnant energy into flowing. Art is joy and solace.”

Her pedagogical final projects dealt with the art process and the significance of spiritual development for the artist and art teacher. “We are often aware of injustices in this world, we need courage to face our own shadows, and then our light also creates peace in the world.”

Susanna Maria lives and works at Art Center Järvilinna in Laukaa. Her website can be found at www.susannamaria.com.
