This course is suitable for individuals who master the basics of egg tempera technique and have some experience in icon painting. Originally originating in Crete in the 15th century, this icon theme touchingly depicts the relationship between the Mother of God and the Christ Child, foreshadowing the trials and sorrow of separation ahead. Unlike many icons that emphasize Christ's serenity and divine wisdom, in this composition the boy is depicted in a human way, startled and seeking solace in his mother's embrace. The pair is framed by two angels holding the instruments of Christ's passion: the cross, spear, and hyssop reed. The icon and its variations remain popular and well-known, especially in Italy. You will receive the model at the beginning of the course, and the panel can be purchased from the institute. The course instruction begins on August 4, with accommodation for the preceding night included in the course price; any meals on August 3 are paid at normal prices at Trapesa. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting courses. The instructor is icon painter Sofia Williams. The language of instruction is Finnish.

The Epass mobile application can be used as a payment method for this course.

Teacher

Williams Sofia

I am an icon painter and theology student from Helsinki. As a teacher, I am patient and gentle, and in my courses, I strive to create an encouraging and warm atmosphere where even a beginner can easily join. Alongside learning the technique, I emphasize a holistic approach to the symbolism and theology of the icon being painted – it is important to understand what we are depicting and why. In addition to painting with egg tempera, I very much enjoy teaching gilding.
