On the course, images are created using mineral grains and stone fragments. During the course, students will create one or two paintings. The main material used is mineral grains obtained from various and different colored rock materials and minerals by crushing and separating them through sieves of different densities into several fractions (coarseness grades). Hardboard is used as the painting's base, primed with marble powder, with a glue mixture as the binder. Then, the desired subject is designed and sketched with a pencil onto the base, which is then worked on by sprinkling 'fragmenting' mineral grains. An abstract subject made with mineral grains also works well. The course teaches the different stages of the method and also how to prepare the fragments oneself. Hardboard bases, glue mixtures, and priming marbles are included in the course price. Ready-made mineral grains of different colors and coarseness grades can be purchased from the instructor. Instructor: stone enthusiast Liisa Hertell. The language of instruction is Finnish.

Hertell Liisa

Liisa Hertell is a communications entrepreneur, publicist, and graphic designer from the vicinity of Tampere. Her hobbies include visual arts and stones: in Firenze, she has studied stone intarsia (pietre dure) using 16th-century methods as an apprentice to conservators, silver and stone processing in goldsmith Hyvärinen's studio, and mineral grit painting in Russia, taught by a geologist who worked at the Geological Institute in Apatiitti. She studies icon painting annually in New Valamo.
