Basics of Icon Painting 10/2026

The course is intended for individuals who wish to learn to paint an Orthodox icon using traditional techniques. Students on the course will paint the Nevalainen version of the Theotokos 'Quick to Hear' icon. The instruction covers the icon painting stages from studying the subject and preparing the drawing to the olifa application (varnishing) of the finished icon. Lectures will discuss the icon from art historical and theological perspectives. Additionally, we will delve into the materials and techniques used in icon painting, which originate from pharaonic Egypt. The icon board and model will be provided at the beginning of the course. Other tools and materials needed for the course can also be purchased from the college. Course instruction begins on October 9th; accommodation for the preceding night is included in the course price, and any meals on October 8th are paid at Trapesa at normal prices. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting course prices. Instructor: icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala. The language of instruction is Finnish.
