Basics of Icon Painting 10/2026

The course is intended for individuals who want to learn to paint an Orthodox icon using traditional techniques. During the course, students will paint Nevalainen's version of the 'Quick to Hear' icon of the Mother of God. The instruction covers all stages of icon painting, from researching the subject to preparing the drawing and oiling (varnishing) the finished icon. Lectures will examine icons from art history and theology perspectives. Additionally, the course delves into the materials and techniques used in icon painting, which date back to Pharaonic Egypt. The icon base and model will be provided at the beginning of the course. Other tools and materials needed for the course can be purchased at the institute. The course instruction begins on October 9th; accommodation for the previous night is included in the course price, and any meals on October 8th are paid at Trapesaan at normal prices. Please note that individuals under 35 years of age receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting courses. The instructor is icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala.
