This course celebrates the Lintula Holy Trinity Convent's settlement in Palokki, Heinävesi, 80 years ago.

The course is suitable for those who master the basic skills of icon painting and have already painted a few icons. The Jerusalem Mother of God belongs to the group of Hodegetria (Guide) icons, and the original image is considered to have been painted by the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The original image was eventually moved to Constantinople, and a copy was made from it, which was taken to Chersonesos in Crimea. After many phases, the icon ended up in Moscow, from where Napoleon's troops stole it. This unique surviving copy of the original image was apparently kept for some time in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, but its current whereabouts are unknown. The copy of the Jerusalem Mother of God icon in Lintula Convent's church, painted in Bethany Women's Monastery, is one of the few icons rescued from old Kivennapa Lintula during the evacuation. It has been blessed in Jerusalem, at the Tomb of Christ, and two small pieces of stone are attached to it, one from the Tomb of Christ and the other from the Rock of Golgotha. This icon, later proven to be miraculous, arrived as a donation to Lintula in the 1930s. The convent was evacuated on the eve of the icon's feast day, which is likely why this particular icon was chosen to be taken along. The current location of the convent was decided between two alternatives by performing a prayer service before the Jerusalem icon and then drawing lots. On this course, we will paint an icon that is a synthesis of the miraculous original image of Lintula and Petros Sasaki's later Byzantine-style version. We will preserve the original icon's color scheme, but for the faces and garments, we will seek a stylistically older expression. You will receive the icon board and model at the beginning of the course. Other tools and materials needed for the course can also be purchased from the institute. The course instruction begins on September 18; accommodation for the preceding night is included in the course price, and any meals on September 17 are paid at normal prices in the Trapeza. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on the price of icon painting courses. Instructor: icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala.
