Hot wax painting, encaustic, has been used as a painting technique since ancient times. The earliest surviving icons painted with this technique, dating from the 6th century onwards, are found mainly in Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai. Egg tempera technique had practically completely superseded the technically more challenging wax painting by the end of the 8th century, and in practice, it has been largely forgotten. In this method, color pigment is mixed with melted beeswax and applied to the painting surface with a small palette knife. Technically, it is challenging to achieve the same line precision as with a brush in tempera painting, but a certain massiveness of the color surface is characteristic of wax painting. Course instruction begins on May 13th; accommodation for the previous night is included in the course price, any meals on May 12th are paid at Trapesaan at normal prices. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting course fees. The teacher is iconographer Alexander Wikström. The language of instruction is Finnish.
