”My beloved, my chosen one! You are an enclosed garden, a locked garden, a sealed fountain, a paradise where streams grow pomegranates, many delicious fruits, henna and nard, nard and saffron, cinnamon and calamus and frankincense trees, myrrh and aloes, the finest of all balms. You are a garden spring, a well of living water, into which the waters of the Lebanon mountains flow!” (Song of Songs 4:12–15) The Mother of God, Enclosed Garden, is a rare icon theme, known to have originated only in the 17th century, depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child amidst plants and water, in an enclosed garden. The icon combines the symbolism of the Song of Songs with the Russian iconography of its time, on the one hand, and Western tradition, on the other. On this course, we will paint a more naturalistic and delicate adaptation of the original Baroque-style image, drawing inspiration from the botanical symbolism of the Song of Songs. Instruction proceeds step by step together. Course instruction begins on April 14th; accommodation for the previous night is included in the course price, any meals on April 13th are paid at Trapesaan at normal prices. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting course fees. The teacher is Icon Painter Sofia Williams. The language of instruction is Finnish.

Epassi mobile application can be used as a payment method for this course.

Williams Sofia

I am an icon painter and theology student from Helsinki. As a teacher, I am patient and gentle, and in my courses, I strive to create an encouraging and warm atmosphere where even a beginner can easily join. Alongside learning the technique, I emphasize a holistic approach to the symbolism and theology of the icon being painted – it is important to understand what we are depicting and why. In addition to painting with egg tempera, I very much enjoy teaching gilding.
