Come and deepen your icon painting skills by painting one of the most beloved icons of the Mother of God in the Orthodox tradition - the Kazan Mother of God icon. This course is aimed at those who have completed Valamo's basic icon painting course or have equivalent knowledge and skills.

According to tradition, the icon was found in 1579 after a large fire in the ruins of a burned house, guided by the vision of a young girl named Matrona. The discovery attracted widespread attention, and stories of miraculous healings and help in difficult situations were early associated with the icon. The original icon later disappeared, but early copies made from it spread the icon type widely throughout the Orthodox world. For centuries, the icon has been especially revered as an icon of protection, consolation, and intercession. During the course, we will get acquainted with the Kazan Mother of God icon and paint it using the traditional tempera technique. The course offers an opportunity to deepen one's skills and contemplate one of the church's most beloved icons. You will receive the panel and model at the beginning of the course. Other tools and materials needed for the course can also be purchased from the institute. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting courses. The instructor is art teacher, icon painter Elina Oravala. The language of instruction is Finnish.

The Epass mobile application can be used as a payment method for this course.

Teacher

Oravala Elina

I am Elina Oravala, an icon painter and lecturer in fine arts, MA.

In teaching, I consider it an important starting point to guide the student towards learning according to their own skill level. I believe that everyone can be skilled and everyone can learn. In addition to teaching technical skills, I find it important that the painter learns to delve into and quiet down into the painting process in their own way.

As a teacher, I am encouraging, friendly, inspiring, and enthusiastic. For me, icons and icon painting are an important part of life, and I gain immense joy and happiness from both, in everyday life as well as on special occasions.

I warmly welcome everyone to my courses!
