This icon painting program is designed for those who wish to study icon painting according to the Orthodox tradition in the peace and quiet of the monastery. Icons are created using the egg tempera technique, also studying gilding and icon surface protection. For each icon, we will explore the iconography and theology of the subject. The program is divided into three sessions, during each of which one icon will be completed. You can be either a first-timer in an icon course or have already painted some icons but want to review the basics and delve deeper into the process. Studying icon painting in weekly classes can be challenging because the meeting times are short. In the icon painting program, you have the opportunity to concentrate persistently and solely on painting. The program is divided into three sessions:
In the first session (September 17–26), under the guidance of icon conservator and painter Antti Narmala, the icon of the Theotokos Portaitissa (Gatekeeper), also known as the Iviron Mother of God, will be painted. The subject of the second session (September 29–October 8) is the Christ Pantocrator (Almighty) icon. This icon will be painted under the direction of icon painter Sofia Williams. The third session (October 12–21) is taught by iconographer Alexander Wikström, and with him, students will paint an icon of a saint of their choice. The tools and materials required for the program are not included in the price and can be purchased from the institute.
The price of the program is 1700 €, including accommodation, instruction, and meals indicated in the program. This program has a special price, and no other usual discounts are granted.
Meals for the long weekend of October 8–10 are not included in the price and are paid at normal prices at Trapesa. Payment for the program can be made in several installments if desired.
If there are remaining spots, individual sessions can be attended at a 10-day course price of 715 €.
Instruction for the program begins on September 17th; accommodation for the preceding night is included in the course price, and any meals on September 16th are paid at normal prices at Trapesa. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on the course price. The language of instruction is Finnish.
