The course is intended for those who have completed Valamo Lay Academy's introductory course, or have already painted a few icons. Saint Mary of Egypt, whose memory is celebrated on the 5th Sunday of Great Lent, guides each of us by her example to self-examination, repentance, and the correction of our ways. Mary, who worked as a prostitute in her youth, eventually dedicated her life to God and spent decades striving spiritually in the desert. On this course, which coincides with the beginning of Great Lent, a simple icon of Mary, focusing on the radiating peace of her face, is painted step by step. At the same time, we will delve into her life. The Divine Services of Forgiveness Sunday and the beginning of Clean Week complement the course's teaching and the start of the Lenten journey. The course teaching begins on February 4th; accommodation for the previous night is included in the course price, any meals on February 3rd are paid at Trapesaan at normal prices. Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on icon painting course fees. The teacher is Icon Painter Sofia Williams. The language of instruction is Finnish.

Epassi mobile application can be used as a payment method for this course.

Williams Sofia

I am an icon painter and theology student from Helsinki. As a teacher, I am patient and gentle, and in my courses, I strive to create an encouraging and warm atmosphere where even a beginner can easily join. Alongside learning the technique, I emphasize a holistic approach to the symbolism and theology of the icon being painted – it is important to understand what we are depicting and why. In addition to painting with egg tempera, I very much enjoy teaching gilding.
