In the advanced course, ribbon lace techniques and works from different countries will be used for bobbin lace making. You will need to bring: a lace pillow or a covered piece of styrofoam/finfoam board, approx. 60x60 cm (blue construction foam board) - cover the styrofoam piece with fabric or an old pillowcase. At least 6 pairs of bobbins (a pair is 2 bobbins) up to 24 pairs. Yarn of strength 50/2 or similar, e.g., Bockens or Goldschild 80/3. If you intend to create, for example, Christmas/Easter/nature-themed items, bring suitable yarns of different colors; stranded cotton threads (muliinilangat) provide good variations in thickness. Effect yarn (Vologda ribbon lace), e.g., stranded cotton or some other thicker yarn (thickness 16/2 or 18/3, a different color than the lace-making yarn, can also be the same shade). Headless pins (pins with heads are not suitable for ribbon lace, remove after possible starching). Crochet hook under 1mm, preferably size 0.6 or 0.5 or a "lazy susan", pusher/bone tool, scissors, contact plastic, (strong hairspray/starch, not essential), note-taking materials, colored pencils: yellow, blue, black, purple, green, red

If you plan to make, for example, national costume laces or nyytinki (small drawstring bags/purses), bring your own patterns and necessary yarns. These are acquired by yourself. The instructor has a small bag of supplies from which you can buy small items if you don't have something. The instructor is Heli Rämö-Kaija, an experienced bobbin lace teacher and artisan. You can get more information from the instructor by phone at 040 5919149; please contact the instructor in advance if you need anything. The language of instruction is Finnish.

Epass mobile app can be used as a payment method for this course.

Teacher

Rämö-Kaija Heli

I am Heli Rämö-Kaija, a bobbin lace teacher, artisan in instruction. My day job is assembling rifles. I graduated as an artisan from Kouvolan Seudun Ammattiopisto in 2019 and have taught bobbin lacemaking since then in several adult education centers. I enjoy many different crafts, knitting, weaving, and lacemaking, as well as various woodworking. In the summers, I cycle on many different personal treks, swim, and move in nature. In winter, I go ice swimming, ski, and downhill ski. I am easily enthusiastic about new things and gladly share this joy of handicrafts. The best part of teaching is when students learn new things even years after starting the hobby. In the course, students can create traditional works as well as items using techniques from different countries, anything they can imagine. Only imagination is the limit. You can see my own and my students' work on Instagram.
