Welcome to Valamo, to the Karelian culture and traditions of today and the future! The weekend is intended for participants of all ages who want to participate in creating and enlivening Karelian culture today and in the future. Join us on a journey where the valuable experiences of the past combine with today's vitality and open paths to future possibilities. The weekend offers an opportunity to reflect on your place in this continuum, find new connections to your roots, or simply explore the possibilities of Karelian culture with fresh eyes. The host for the weekend is Karelian hipster Mika Saatsi.

Teacher

Saatsi Mika

Mika Saatsi is probably the only member of the Finnish Supervisors' Association STOry who states that he supervises work in Finnish and English, as well as Karelian. Saatsi, who works as an independent work supervisor-entrepreneur, had a twenty-year career as the principal of Kellokoski Hospital School before reorganizing his work arrangements. In addition to work supervision, this man, who calls himself a Karelian hipster, has various tasks related to the Karelian language and culture as part of his daily work. Mika creates and performs Karelian-language music in the bands Loimolan Voima, Saatsi & Shemeikka, Bratanat, and Tulenlendo. He remotely teaches the Proper Karelian / South Karelian language at Tuusula College. The Uusi-Suistamo and Gostis podcasts, Katerina da Miša opassetah suvikarjalua instructional videos, and the Suistamon paginua YouTube channel, as well as lectures on border Karelian culture that include music/sound, are also part of the language and culture revitalization work. He sings Orthodox church music in Järvenpää Orthodox Church and serves on the board of the Suistamo Heritage Association. Photo: Suistamon Perinneseura
