Icon painting is more than creating an image. It is contemplation, spiritual struggle, the rhythm of prayer, patient layering, and acceptance of incompleteness. In its discipline, icon painting differs significantly from the ideal of self-expression typical of contemporary free art. Nevertheless - or perhaps precisely because of this - it may open something new within ourselves. When the rush of everyday life recedes and space is created for silence, one often begins to hear one's inner self in a new way. The process can also evoke various emotions such as joy, restlessness, emotion, frustration, insights, or peace. All these are part of the journey.

In this course, timed for the Easter season, we will paint a simple icon suitable for the season, step by step, using the traditional egg tempera technique. The Course is suitable for both beginners and those who have already painted a few icons. Alongside icon painting, we will explore the Church's teaching on confronting our imperfections. The Course includes a Therapist who supports a safe learning and working environment, also through short thematic presentations. However, this is not therapy, but an opportunity to make space for one's own experience, to pause and reflect on it, and to continue working safely. Each person can walk their own path, in a supportive and accepting atmosphere shared with others. Teachers are Icon Painter Sofia Williams and Therapist Pia Vesterinen. Welcome to the icon, to contemplate and to discover something new within yourself, layer by layer! Please note that those under 35 years old receive a 40 percent discount on the course price. Course instruction begins on April 3rd; Accommodation for the preceding night is included in the course price. Any meals on April 2nd are paid at Restaurant Trapesa at normal prices. The language of instruction is Finnish.

The Epassi mobile application can be used as a payment method for this course.

Teacher

Williams Sofia

I am an icon painter and theology student from Helsinki. As a teacher, I am patient and gentle, and in my courses, I strive to create an encouraging and warm atmosphere where even a beginner can easily join. Alongside learning the technique, I emphasize a holistic approach to the symbolism and theology of the icon being painted – it is important to understand what we are depicting and why. In addition to painting with egg tempera, I very much enjoy teaching gilding.
